Fairy Floss Sugar Guide
What is fairy floss made of?
Fairy floss is made of sugar, with a little flavour and colour mixed in. Nothing else goes into the machine. The spinning head of a fairy floss machine heats the sugar until it melts, then spins it out through tiny holes. The melted sugar cools into fine threads in the air, and you wind those threads onto a stick.
What sugar do you use in a fairy floss machine?
You have two choices:
- Flossing sugar. Sugar that already has the flavour and colour mixed in, ready to pour straight into the machine. Ours is Australian made and suits most machines.
- Regular white sugar mixed with Flosscol. Flosscol is our flavour and colour concentrate, made by Flossy's in Australia. You mix it into standard white sugar to make your own flossing sugar.
How to make your own flavoured floss sugar
- Measure your white sugar. Flosscol needs just 5 grams for every 1kg of sugar.
- Put the sugar and Flosscol in a bucket or a sealed bag, then stir or shake for about 10 minutes, until the colour is even.
- Pour the mixed sugar into your machine as normal.
A 100g pack of Flosscol makes up to 20kg of flavoured sugar, a 500g pack up to 100kg, and a 1kg pack up to 200kg.
You can also mix two or more Flosscol flavours in one batch. Experiment to make your own blends.
Ready-made or mix your own?
- Choose ready-made flossing sugar if you want to open a bag and start, or you only need one or two flavours for an event.
- Choose Flosscol if you go through a lot of sugar, want to store less, or want more flavours and your own blends. Mixing your own also costs less per fairy floss than buying ready-made flossing sugar.
How many fairy floss does a bag make?
- 800g bag: 30 to 40 medium fairy floss
- 3kg bag: about 100 large fairy floss
- 15kg bag: about 500 to 800 fairy floss
So 100g of floss sugar makes roughly 4 to 5 medium fairy floss.
Keeping your sugar fresh
Store floss sugar sealed and dry. Moisture in the air makes sugar clump, and clumped sugar does not spin well. Sugar mixed with Flosscol keeps for more than 12 months when stored sealed and dry.
How long does fairy floss last?
Fresh fairy floss is best eaten on the day it is made, because it soaks up moisture from the air and shrinks. Sealed in a bag, it keeps much longer. Our packed 30g and 70g fairy floss bags are best within 8 to 12 weeks, and our 100g and 200g tubs within 6 to 8 months.
